How much does a plumber cost in Malta?

Three Maltese pricing guides published in 2026 broadly agree on hourly and call-out rates. Here is what they say, what the figures leave out, and the local conditions — access, hard water, Gozo, out-of-hours work — that move a quote away from the published band.

What the published rates actually say

Three Maltese guides put out 2026 pricing for plumbing work, and they land close enough together to be useful as a sanity check on a quote.

WhatPublished figureWhere it comes from
Hourly rateEUR 20–50 per hourCheck Your Traders; Malta Service Hub

The honest reading of that table is that the overlap — EUR 25–50 an hour, with a call-out on top — is the band an ordinary job should sit in. A quote below it is either a loss leader or a trainee. A quote well above it is not automatically wrong, but it needs a reason attached, and the reasons are set out further down.

Check Your Traders also publishes figures for day rates, drain clearing, WC repairs, water-heater work, full bathroom installations and per-square-metre renovation. Those are single-source numbers. The other two guides publish nothing comparable against which to check them, so they are not repeated here as though the market agreed on them. Where a figure has only one publisher, treat it as one opinion, not a benchmark.

What the hourly rate does not include

The hourly rate buys labour. It does not usually buy:

  • The call-out. A separate line, at the figures above.
  • Materials. No Maltese source publishes what plumbers mark materials up by. Ask for materials to be itemised.
  • VAT. None of the three guides says whether its figures are inclusive or exclusive. This is the most common argument about a Maltese plumbing bill and the easiest one to prevent, by asking one question before work starts.
  • Second visits. If the part is not in the van, someone is driving back. In Gozo, someone is driving back via the ferry.

The common jobs, and what actually drives them

Leaks

Leak detection and leak repair are two different purchases. thebestmalta.com puts detection at EUR 300–600, and that is not a mistake or a typo — tracing a concealed leak with acoustic or thermal kit is a specialist half-day with no pipework cut at the end of it. The repair is priced separately, on hourly rates.

Most Maltese homes hide the problem well. Pipes chased into globigerina limestone or hollow block behind plaster and tiles do not announce themselves; the first sign is often a damp patch on a neighbour's ceiling, which turns a repair into a condominium matter as well as a plumbing one. If the leak is in shared risers or affects a flat below, the works and the cost allocation fall under the condominium's rules, and that conversation is usually slower than the repair.

WCs, cisterns and taps

Cistern and tap repairs are the bread-and-butter of the published hourly band. Malta Service Hub covers both. They are short jobs, often a washer, valve or float, and they are the category where the call-out fee can exceed the labour — which is precisely why asking whether the call-out is absorbed into the first hour matters more on a dripping tap than on a bathroom strip-out.

Hard water is the variable a British arrival underestimates. Scale shortens the life of every washer, valve, seal and cartridge in the property, so "I only replaced that two years ago" is not evidence of a bad fitting here.

Water heaters and geysers

Most Maltese homes heat water with an electric geyser on a timer, sometimes paired with a solar cylinder, not with a gas combi. That changes the fault list entirely: heating elements, thermostats, anodes and scale rather than diverter valves and PCBs. It also means a replacement is an electrical job as much as a plumbing one, and that cylinders sit in awkward places — bathroom ceilings, roof rooms, shafts — where access drives the hours.

Bathroom re-plumbs and per-square-metre work

Full bathroom work is the only category the guides price by area rather than by hour, and Check Your Traders is the only one of the three that publishes a per-square-metre figure. Two things move it hard in Malta. First, shell form: a property sold as a shell has no first fix at all, so the plumber is designing the run, not replacing it, and the cost is not comparable to a UK "rip out and refit". Second, mains pressure. Much of the housing stock relies on a roof tank feeding by gravity, so if a client wants rainfall showers or two bathrooms running at once, the real cost is a pump, a booster set or a re-routed feed — not the sanitaryware.

What moves a quote away from the published band

  • Access. Roof tanks, shafts, chased pipework and tiled-over runs all convert a one-hour job into a three-hour job. Nothing about the rate changes; the hours do.
  • Hard water. Seized fittings are normal and they take longer to remove than to replace.
  • Gozo. Every delivery, every forgotten part and every follow-up visit is a ferry crossing. No source publishes a Gozo surcharge, so it turns up disguised — as a higher call-out, a minimum charge, or a longer lead time while parts come over. Ask which.
  • Out of hours. thebestmalta.com confirms after-8pm and Sunday surcharges exist. The call-out alone goes from EUR 20–50 to EUR 45–100 at nights and weekends. If the leak can be isolated at the stopcock and left until Monday, do that.
  • Condominium rules. Works affecting common parts, risers or facades in an apartment block need the block's agreement, and the scheduling cost is real even when the plumbing cost is not.

Who is actually accountable

There is no plumber's licence in Malta in the sense a UK homeowner expects — no register, no scheme number to check. Verification schemes such as CheckYourTraders exist and are voluntary, which makes them a useful signal rather than a regulatory guarantee.

That puts the burden on the paperwork. Before work starts, get the hourly rate, the call-out fee, whether VAT is included, and whether materials are itemised or marked up. Afterwards, get an invoice that separates labour from parts and states a warranty period. Note also that the Water Services Corporation owns the meter and the supply up to it, and ARMS handles the billing — a plumber has no authority over either, so a disputed bill or a suspected meter fault is a separate process from a repair.

Common questions

What is a normal hourly rate for a plumber in Malta?
The 2026 guides put it at EUR 20–50 per hour (Check Your Traders and Malta Service Hub) and EUR 25–50 per hour (thebestmalta.com). The overlap across all three is EUR 25–50 per hour. Where a job falls in that band depends on the trade skill needed, not on the postcode.
Should I expect to pay a call-out fee on top?
Usually yes. The guides put a daytime call-out at EUR 20–50, and EUR 45–100 for nights and weekends. Some plumbers absorb the call-out into the first hour if you go ahead with the work; ask before the van is dispatched, because it is not a universal practice.
Does it cost more in Gozo?
The published rate cards do not carry a Gozo line, but every part and every second visit crosses on the ferry. Expect travel to be priced in somewhere — as a higher call-out, a minimum half-day, or a longer wait while parts are brought over. Ask which of the three it is.
Do I need a licensed plumber in Malta?
There is no plumber's licence in Malta in the sense a UK reader expects — no Gas Safe equivalent, no register you can check a number against. Verification schemes such as CheckYourTraders exist and are voluntary. The practical substitutes are a written quote, an itemised invoice and a named warranty period.

What we could not establish

  • The Check Your Traders guide publishes figures for day rates, drain clearing, WC repairs, water-heater work, bathroom installations and per-square-metre renovation. Those are single-source numbers with nothing comparable in the other two guides to check them against, so they are not reproduced here as agreed market rates.
  • None of the three guides states whether the quoted rates include VAT. That alone can move a bill materially, and it is the single most common source of dispute over a Maltese plumbing invoice.
  • No source publishes a Gozo travel surcharge, a ferry-crossing charge, or a minimum charge for island call-outs.
  • thebestmalta.com establishes that after-8pm and Sunday surcharges exist but does not state how they are calculated — flat uplift, multiplied hourly rate, or a higher minimum.
  • Nobody publishes what plumbers mark up materials by, or whether client-supplied fittings are accepted and warranted.
  • No source addresses how condominium rules or shell-form purchases affect a plumbing quote, despite both being normal features of Maltese property.
