Leaks, bursts and blocked drains

A visible leak is an hour's job with a band you can read before you ring. A hidden one — the damp patch on the neighbour's ceiling, the bill that doubled — is a different job: thermal imaging, tracer gas or a camera to find it before anyone breaks a tile, which is why detection has its own line in the calculator. The Water Services Corporation bills every unit that goes through your meter, leak or not, and gives rebates only for hidden residential leaks on a consumption discrepancy, so finding it fast is worth money.

Drains in Maltese buildings block for Maltese reasons: hard-water scale, wet wipes, grease in a shared stack, and roots in an old run. Unblocking is a priced job; a camera survey to find out why it keeps happening is quoted on site.

What it costs

The bands come from Maltese price guides published in 2026: a simple leak repair €50 to €150, drain unblocking €60 to €200, specialist leak detection €300 to €600. Call-outs are listed so you know what a visit costs before the work.

A band, not a quote: the low end is a straightforward job with clear access, the high end is the same job with the complications a site visit finds. Materials are included where the line says so.

Questions people ask

What should I do before the plumber arrives?

Turn off the stopcock, switch off the geyser if the leak is on the hot side, and move anything electrical away from the water. Then ring.

Will the Water Services Corporation refund a leak?

Only for hidden leaks in residential property, based on the discrepancy in consumption, and only once the leak is repaired. You are responsible for consumption registered on your meter.
