Replacement geysers, elements and descales — and the solar system the grant pays a third of.
Maltese water scales an electric geyser to death in eight to twelve years. The element goes first, then the tank. A new element or thermostat is a cheap job; a descale with a new sacrificial anode every two or three years is what stretches the tank's life; and when it does go, a like-for-like replacement is a morning's work with the old unit taken away.
The alternative is solar. Maltese suppliers price 160 to 300 litre stainless systems at €2,200 to €3,300 installed, and the Regulator for Energy and Water Services' 2025 Water Heater Scheme — open until 31 December 2026 — has paid up to €1,400 towards one. You apply before you buy and again after commissioning, with the installer's certificate.
Unit and fitting are separate figures in the Maltese guides — a replacement geyser €150 to €400 for the unit and €80 to €200 to fit — so the band below adds them. Solar figures are a Maltese supplier's published installed prices before the grant.
| Job | Unit | Band | What is in it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electric water heater (geyser) replacement | per unit | €230 – €600 | unit €150–400 plus fitting €80–200; disposal of the old one included |
| Heater element or thermostat | per job | €60 – €130 | parts and labour |
| Geyser descale and anode | per job | €80 – €150 | every two to three years in Maltese water |
| Solar water heater, supplied and installed | per system | €2,200 – €3,300 | 160–300 L stainless systems before the REWS grant of up to €1,400 |
A band, not a quote: the low end is a straightforward job with clear access, the high end is the same job with the complications a site visit finds. Materials are included where the line says so.
