Pumps, roof tanks and pressure

Why the pressure is low, and the pump, tank and float valve that fix it.

Maltese mains pressure is low and intermittent, which is why the roof of every block carries a row of polyethylene tanks and most homes run a pressure pump off them. When the taps slow to a dribble it is one of three things: the pump, the float valve that fills the tank, or a tank that has run dry or split. The site visit tells you which.

New builds add a fourth item: the rainwater cistern the sanitary regulations require, with its own submersible pump feeding the WCs, the washing machine and the garden. Pumps and tanks are sold at Maltese counters at published prices; what no Maltese guide publishes is the fitting, so that part is quoted on site.

What this covers

What it costs

Supply prices are published by Maltese suppliers — pumps from €60 to €240, well pumps from €80 to €378, roof tanks from €78 to over €1,000 by size, all before VAT where stated. Fitting has no published Maltese figure and is quoted on site; the call-out band shows what the visit costs.

How it works

You deal with us, not with the trade. We visit, we quote a fixed price, we bring in a plumber from the CheckYourTraders-verified network, and we stand behind the work. One point of contact, one contract, one invoice.

Questions people ask

Can I run the house straight off the mains?
Pressure will not carry a shower on an upper floor for most of the day. The tank and pump exist because of that, and we have found no rule that forbids a mains-fed pump — but ask the Water Services Corporation before fitting one.
How big a tank do I need?
A day's use with a margin: a couple of hundred litres per person is a common rule of thumb, sized against the roof space and the structure that has to carry it full.
